Women in pain

The ovaries can be described as 2 small glands that are found on both sides of the female lower pelvis. The glands play a crucial role in reproduction, development of sexual characteristics in ladies and the menstrual cycle. Every month, a single follicle matures to become an egg. Therefore, ovulation is the process by which the egg is released and this occurs from around puberty all the way to menopause.

The following are  five possible causes of ovarian pain:

Ovulation
The pain experienced during ovulation is also referred to as Mittelschmerz. The ovulation process is characterized by the ovary releasing 1 egg. It happens approximately on the 14th day of an average menstrual cycle. There are women who experience severe discomfort during this time while others do not. It is pain that lasts for a few minutes or even hours. The pain can occur on either one side of the body or both. It is accompanied by increased vaginal discharge, bleeding, and nausea. It does not need any treatment.
Ovarian cysts
An ovarian cyst can be defined as a fluid-filled sac which thrives on the ovary of a woman. These cysts are fairly common and do not have any symptoms unless it is ruptured or large. In that case, its symptoms are general discomfort, feeling full, frequent urge to urinate, changes in menstrual periods, bloating and pain. Majority of cysts are non-cancerous. Birth control pills are prescribed by doctors to assist in shrinking a cyst or surgery to eliminate it.
Endometriosis
It can be defined as the abnormal growth of a woman’s menstrual tissue that is situated outside the uterus. The tissue grows almost anywhere in the pelvis or abdomen and this is inclusive of the ovary. In fact, it behaves in a similar manner as during a menstrual cycle. At the onset of the cycle, the menstrual tissue grows, and this is in response to body hormones. The tissue starts peeling off at menstruation and is shed off. This situation can result in severe pelvic or abdominal pain, scar tissue and internal bleeding. It can be managed with surgery, hormonal medication, and pain medications as it has no cure.
Ovarian remnant syndrome
This occurs in ladies who have undergone surgery to remove their fallopian tubes and ovaries. Remnants of ovarian tissue inside the pelvis can proceed to respond to hormones as well as to produce them. This results in intermittent or constant pain. Victims experience pain during bowel movement, when urinating and during sex. Radiation treatment or medication can be used destroy remaining ovarian tissue.
Phantom pains
Generally, ovaries are surrounded by other body organs. This means that women may experience ovarian pain as a result of other medical conditions. Conditions that might result in phantom pains are appendicitis, constipation, kidney stones, pregnancy and urinary tract infection.
Pelvic inflammatory disease
This is a disease that is popularly referred to as PID. The infection is spread to the fallopian tube/ ovaries and the uterus. The bacteria responsible for the disease is transmitted via sexual intercourse like from chlamydia or gonorrhea. That is why it is important to get tested for chlamydia. A person can also contract the disease after abortion, miscarriage, IUD insertion, childbirth or other invasive procedures. The patient should be put under antibiotics to help clear the infection. A single injection should suffice but intravenous antibiotics are necessary for severe cases.
When to see a doctor
Women should see a doctor whenever they experience unusual pain in their pelvis. The doctor will perform a comprehensive pelvic exam to establish the source of pain.
